On October 3, Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze met with the Ambassador of Switzerland to Georgia Gunter Behlerom and U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Richard Norland. According to the Georgian Foreign Ministry, the main topics of these meetings were Georgia’s parliamentary elections and the relations between the countries. Diplomats stressed the need to preserve and continue the existing cooperation.
“The strategic relations between Georgia and the United States are also to be kept, as it is one of the guarantees of independence, freedom, territorial integrity and development of our country” – said Vashadze.
According to him, the foreign press has actively written that the myth of Mikheil Saakashvili as “modernizer”, not democrat, as his detractors have tried to present, is broken, and he noted that, since 2003, Georgia has become a developed state, in which it was possible to achieve much progress in all fields.
Norland expressed hope that the close relationship between Georgia and the U.S. will continue and no dramatic changes in the Georgian-US relations are expected. The Ambassador also praised election process in Georgia as a whole.
“Everybody follow the electoral process, which has not yet been completed, with great attention and are ready for normal and free transfer of power,” – said Norland.
