Dear Partners,
I am writing you with a feeling of regret as the Armenian-Hungarian relations have been severed completely. As you can guess I point to Ramil Safarov’s extradition, the Azerbaijani army lieutenant sentenced to death in your country in 2004 for the brutal murder of the Armenian army officer Gurgen Margaryan during NATO classes.
As you know, Safarov was judged for killing Gurgen Margaryan in sleep. Safarov’s committed a cool-headed crime with 16 blows of hold, almost cutting the Armenian officer’s head in line with absence of repentance.
During the last 8 years the Azerbaijani Government officers, politicians and republic figures for many times have expressed their joy for that awful crime. Consequently, Hungarian authorities could not be uncertain that Ramil Safarov will become a national hero in his country, the first day of his return, which in its turn, will be a source of pride for the generation to come.
And it happened, when your country decided to sent him back to Azerbaijan; he was released and pardoned.
That’s why now I will spoke about the legal side of Safarov’s extradition; this is a serious violation of justice, manslaughter, and a dangerous signal to the Azerbaijani Government, which will continue encouraging anti-Armenian propaganda and a large scale attack on Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. The consequence of the Hungarian authorities was not only predictable, but also obvious: they took the entire responsibility on their shoulders, and did not allow the murderer to bear even 10 years of his sentence.
The shared values between us and our European partners are so spoiled that I am not able to expect any moral improvement.
But at least now, when the brutal murderer became a hero in Azerbaijan, Hungary and other European countries will understand why Nagorno-Karbakh Armenians do not want to live under the government of Azerbaijan.
Sincerely
Vahan Hovhannisyan
