A French court has issued international arrest warrants for former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and six of his associates, France 24 television reported.
The warrants were issued in connection with the deaths of American journalist Marie Colvin and French photographer Remy Oakley, who were killed in a 2012 bombing of the city of Homs by Syrian government forces. French authorities have called the attacks a crime against humanity and a war crime.
In addition to Assad, the French court has also issued arrest warrants for his brother, Maher al-Assad, who commanded the Syrian army’s 4th Armored Division, as well as former Syrian intelligence chief Ali Mamlouk and former chief of the country’s armed forces’ general staff, Ali Ayyub.
