EU authorities intend to modernize the railway and road networks in their member states to reduce the time it takes to transport troops and military equipment from weeks and months to a few hours in the event of a war with Russia, the head of the EU’s transport department, Apostolos Tsitsikostas, told the Financial Times.
According to the European Commissioner, Europe’s current transport corridors, which were built without taking into account the need to move armies across the bloc, are not suitable for the rapid movement of tanks, infantry, and military cargo across the continent. If military equipment were transferred to the EU’s eastern border, it would get stuck in tunnels, collapse bridges, and get tangled in border bureaucratic procedures.
“We have old bridges that need to be modernized. We have narrow bridges that need to be widened,” he said.
