North Atlantic alliance will place “Patriot” strategic air defense systems on the border of Turkey and Syria “in the coming weeks.” The statement was announced by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
According to Rasmussen, the systems will perform exclusively defensive role, protecting the Turkish territory against possible missile attacks from Syria. NATO secretary general has warned Damascus of trying to carry out such attacks, saying that the allies will immediately defend Ankara.
Rasmussen promised that “Patriots” will not be used to create “no-fly zone “over Syria, although it is technically possible.
According to the information, NATO plans to deploy ten air defense batteries in Turkey, which can cover almost the entire border with Syria.
