Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a statement on the occasion of Armenian Genocide Memorial Day.
“Today, we join the Armenian communities of Canada and around the world to commemorate Armenian Genocide Memorial Day. We reflect on this dark page of history, honor those who lost their lives, and reflect on the psychological damage that many still endure.
“Twenty years ago, the Canadian government joined the members of the international community in officially recognizing the historical and tragic reality of the Armenian Genocide. This recognition has a deep meaning for many Canadians, particularly Armenian Canadians. Together, we will ensure that the history of the victims is never forgotten.
In Canada, April is considered the month of commemoration, condemnation, and prevention of the Genocide; it reminds us of the consequences of indifference. We must remember and honor the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide. We must stand against hate. It is our shared collective responsibility.
Armenian Genocide Memorial Day is a time of reflection and remembrance. All Canadians should be interested and aware of the events that caused so many casualties. Let’s build a society where everyone will feel safe from discrimination and violence,” the message says.
