Georgian media, citing the announcement of country’s Justice Minister Tea Tsulukian, reports that Former Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Okruashvili was detained at the border as a wanted person and placed in jail No.8 in Tbilisi.
Tsulukiani stressed that the Georgian parliament recognized Okruashvili as a victim of political persecution by the former government.
“But there is a specific criminal case and he must answer for it,” Tsulukiani said.
Former Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Okruashvili returned home on Tuesday morning.
On March 28, 2008, Okruashvili was sentenced to 11 years in prison for abuse of authority and embezzlement of budget funds. After that, he managed to escape to France and get political refugee status there. Later he was charged with creating illegal armed groups.
