U.S. Assistant of the State Secretary Philip Gordon found it natural that a certain tension remains in the country after the elections.
As he told reporters at the state office, the fact that Georgia has a president and prime minister of different political orientation is a positive step.
“However, it is natural that there are difficulties. It is inevitable after a strenuous campaign. We have called on both sides to prevent the tension to create problems in the rule of law. Both sides took to heart the interests of the country and both sides know that it is not in their interests. I urge them to avoid fights, political punishment and charges. The international community is closely watching these processes. The U.S. believes that Georgia should continue the policy of integration with the West and there should be a peaceful democratic transition of power.”- said Gordon.
