The Azerbaijani Turan mass media reports that on September 10 the US state department repeated its position on notorious Safarov affair. The press secretary of the state department Victoria Nuland urged Baku to take up the responsibility of the extradition from Hungary.
Western experts expressed their views on this deal.
Oxford University professor Neal MacFarlane announced that the US sharp reaction has two explanations: “The first is that Safarov’s pardon ruins the efforts of reaching peace and the second is that USA administration must take into consideration the opinions of Armenian electorate.”
The restart of military actions is a real threat not only for Armenia and Azerbaijan, but also for the region. No party wants war, but in case of the absence of efficient negotiation process, the occasional risk of starting war is possible.”
An expert of British Foreign Politics center Alex Jackson thinks that EU can have more active role in regulation process, but needs more levers, which belong only to Russia.
Washington is really concerned by Safarov’s affair and its impact on negotiations. Armenia welcomes Washington’s announcements but is well aware that US cannot and doesn’t have the wish to change anything.”
