EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kalas said member states could reach an agreement today on sanctions against Jewish settlers who commit violence in the West Bank. Although the majority needed for a final decision is yet to be confirmed, the recent change of government in Hungary could be crucial for the project to move forward.
“I expect a political agreement on sanctions against settlers who commit violence. I hope we will achieve it,” Kallas said.
The move is a response to a sharp increase in extremist attacks in the region. At the same time, some EU countries are seeking tougher measures, proposing to suspend the partnership agreement with Israel or impose individual sanctions on right-wing Israeli ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich.
