On the occasion of the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, French Prime Minister Sebastien Le Corneille delivered a speech in Marseille, where he emphasized France’s constant support for Armenia and the Armenian people. He noted that Armenia will continue to survive.
According to Le Corneille, France has always been by Armenia’s side, recognized the Armenian Genocide and cherished its memory, as they do today in Marseille. He emphasized that more than 58,000 Armenian refugees have arrived in the port of Marseille, and their children continue to live there. The Armenian community in France is very important, and they are already working at the highest levels of the country with their determination, courage, and ethics.
The French Prime Minister emphasized that the children who survived the Armenian Genocide continue to keep the memory of their people alive, and Armenians and French people have overcome common difficulties together, establishing a strong friendship. He also emphasized that France will continue to support Armenia, not only diplomatically, but also militarily.
“Armenia has survived and will survive. France is always by its side. The sovereignty of a friendly country is not up for debate. France supports Armenia, diplomatically and now also militarily. French weapons are regularly sent to Armenia so that the country can defend itself. France constantly provides weapons to Armenia to ensure its self-defense, and French soldiers assist the Armenian army in Armenia.
He also emphasized that France’s support for Armenia is the result not only of friendship but also of historical ties: the two countries have a millennia-long history of union.
Lecornu also wrote: “In Marseille, 111 years after the Armenian Genocide, France remembers. Genocide. Crime against humanity. More than a million children, women, and men were killed. But this does not erase anything: neither the greatness of the people, nor the beauty of the language and culture, nor the memory that continues to be transmitted here in Marseille.
“True to its history, France supports Armenia, its defense and peace. Its sovereignty is not subject to discussion.”
