Armenia does not have a direct border with the Russian Federation, but, of course, the Russian Federation is a very severe and significant player in the South Caucasus region, RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated at the meeting with British media representatives.
“As for our rapprochement with the West, we have always been close to the West to get closer now. Even if many give the example that after the People’s Non-Violent Velvet Revolution of 2018, the relations with the West had become very close before the revolution, Armenia and the European Union signed a Comprehensive and Extended Partnership Agreement with each other, and the responsibility to implement that agreement already fell on our government.
Of course, our achievements in democracy created and continue to create objective conditions for dynamic development in our relations. But nothing unpredictable is happening if we step outside the current news torrents and streams for a moment. If we even record that after the revolution of 2018, we also said that democracy is not a policy we adopted due to circumstances, but it is a strategy for us. There is also another essential circumstance, and that circumstance is the diversification of foreign relations and security relations.
But, to be very direct and honest, it is not a cause but an effect because we are diversifying our foreign relations, yes, but we are not the only ones diversifying. Practically, you will not find any actor in the world today that is not diversifying its foreign relations, even those deemed sufficiently diversified by 2022.
Everyone diversifies their foreign relations, and Armenia must overcome this new trend. Regarding our further rapprochement with the European Union, I said in my speech at the European Parliament that the Republic of Armenia is ready to be as close to the European Union as the European Union deems possible.
Now we seem to be going that way, and it is essential to record this publicly because we and the European Union, especially after the tripartite meeting in Brussels on April 5, are attributed to some “secret agreements” and so on. : It is essential to record that transparency is necessary for us, and we have transparently published the agendas and transparently published the results. And yes, we see a rapprochement of relations with the European Union to a certain extent. Still, according to my records, nothing extraordinary is happening there because it is a course that the Republic of Armenia has not adopted at all,” the Prime Minister noted.
