On March 21, RA Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, who was in Montevideo on an official visit, met with the Foreign Minister of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, Omar Paganini.
The interlocutors noted with satisfaction the high level of political dialogue between Armenia and Uruguay, expressing their readiness to enrich the bilateral agenda in various fields further. Both sides emphasized that this historic visit of the RA Foreign Minister and the opening of resident embassies in the capitals of both countries are the best evidence of the desire to deepen cooperation.
Ararat Mirzoyan and Omar Paganini greatly emphasized the development of trade-economic and business relations through the level of political dialogue and the maximum use of new opportunities in education and high technologies. Both sides stressed the mechanism’s effectiveness in holding political consultations between the foreign political departments of Armenia and Uruguay, confirming the intention to have the following consultations in Yerevan.
The two ministers also emphasized the unique role of the large Armenian community in Uruguay in strengthening friendly ties between the Armenian and Uruguayan peoples. In this context, Uruguay, having given asylum to Armenian survivors of the Armenian Genocide at the beginning of the last century, was the first to recognize the genocide in 1965 and today sees the significant contribution of Armenian figures and specialists in its social and political corner.
At the meeting, the issues of cooperation on multilateral platforms within the framework of international organizations were also discussed.
The security situation in the South Caucasus was also discussed during the meeting. Ararat Mirzoyan presented to his colleague the latest developments in the process of normalizing relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the ongoing negotiations on the peace treaty. The RA Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of mutual and unequivocal recognition of sovereignty and territorial integrity, which should be based on the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration and serve as a political basis for demarcation between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
In the context of unblocking regional transport and economic channels, Minister Mirzoyan presented the RA government’s “Crossroads of Peace” program and the financial opportunities it provides to the South Caucasus and beyond.
Ararat Mirzoyan emphasized the importance of the international community adhering to the well-known principles of international law, which is currently full of challenges and undermines the world order. The lack of this continuously leads to new escalations. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia expressed his gratitude for Uruguay’s positions on critical issues for Armenia.
Minister Mirzoyan also presented the steps taken by the RA government to address the needs of the Armenian population forcibly displaced from Nagorno Karabakh as a result of ethnic cleansing by Azerbaijan.
