Head of the RA Prime Minister’s Office Arayik Harutyunyan and RA MESCS Deputy Minister Karen Giloyan spoke at the press conference today about the activities of holding the European Weightlifting Championship in RA.
Giloyan considered hosting the championship in RA as a restoration of historical justice, “Today, a historical event is happening in Armenia. Exactly 40 years ago, the sports concert complex was to be opened, and the European and World Weightlifting Championships would be held here. After 40 years, we are returning the sports concert complex to its historic mission. It will host the European Championship.”
According to him, Armenia should host a similar tournament because the Armenian weightlifting team is one of the best in the world and will not participate in this tournament just for participation.
Araik Harutyunyan also considered holding the European Championship in Yerevan an exceptional event of 2023, “One of the most important public events in 2023 will be the European Weightlifting Championship. On March 17, the championship countdown clock will be installed on Northern Avenue. The European Championship is ranking for the Olympic Games, increasing interest in this tournament. Europe’s strongest athletes will come to Armenia.”
According to him, similar tournaments increase the credit of Armenia in the sports world, “When applying to similar host tournaments, we tell the federations that we will do our best and set a new benchmark. We did it last year in the case of the European Boxing Championship.”
