Former Prime Minister of Armenia Hrant Bagratyan has decided to get nominated for the upcoming presidential elections and freeze his relations with Armenian National Congress rulling body meanwhile noting he will withdraw if Levon Ter-Petrossian is nominated.
To state that Bagratyan’s decision was expected especially after the notorius recording where Levon Zurabyan makes few comments concerning Bagratyan would probably be wrong. Generally the divide between Bagratyan and ANC has deeper roots than the recording. On the other the fact that Bagratyan could announce his nomination long before Ter-Petrossian and be ‘officially” blamed for dividing ANC forces was not expected either. Thus this creates a new situation in Armenia’s domestic politics. ANC’s present state is the task of ANC and only since the institution has stopped being essential in domestic developments. Nevertheless, Bagratyan’s nomination creates ground for real politics which can unite certain liberal forces.
Several past experiences of uniting liberal forces have been futile. The current incident can be a new one where most important is the ideological base and not individuals or parties involved in.
