Today, the European parliament is going to discuss and accept the draft resolution on pardoning the Azerbaijani officer Ramil Safarov presented by its five main political forces. Initially the five political parties, which are the European Green Party, People’s Party, Party of European Socialists, Alliance of European Conservatives and European Liberal Democrat party have presented their draft resolutions.
All the parties have expressed concerns about extraditing a murderer and later pardoning him and even promoting him. Including all the concerns, the party of Liberal democrats also noted that in 2001Armenia pardoned Varoujan Garabedian who was extradited to Armenia by France. As it is known the two cases cannot be compared as Garabedian was not an Armenian citizen and he was not pardoned by the Armenian president. Most probably, taking thi into consideration, the writers of the reolution have excluded this point from the final version of the draft.
The head of the RA NA Foreign relations committee Artak Zaqaryan, in his interview with 1in. am news and analyses said that he received the final version of the draft resolution where all five parties have combined their requirements. Even though Garabedian’s case was excluded from the draft resolution, but there still was the idea of “occupied territories” which is not favorable for Armenia. It will be clear today how the final resolution will be for or against Armenia.
