The International Crisis Group has published a new report on settling the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and is examining the current situation. In addition to referring to possible US steps, the report presents Baku’s position on the case.
It is noted that the construction of the road passing through the Syunik region of RA, which will connect Azerbaijan with the Nakhichevan exclave, is a priority for Azerbaijan.
“In the past, Baku insisted that this proposed corridor through Armenia should be regulated in the same way as Lachin, which passes through Azerbaijan, with Russian control of the road. But now that Baku has falsified Lachin’s agreement, diplomats are worried that he will switch to a different approach, carrying out military aggression against Syunik so that the road to Nakhichevan will also be in his hands. Azerbaijani officials, however, state in private conversations that they do not have such plans, and the prospect of the road to Nakhichevan, in their opinion, is suspended for now.
Now, in subtle rhetoric, Baku officials and experts have hinted to the Crisis Group that Azerbaijan may accept control of the road by Armenia if arrangements such as customs regulations, security measures, and other protocols are upheld and guaranteed by external impartial actors. :
