A group of U.S. lawmakers, led by Congresswoman Dina Titus (D-NV), plans to introduce a first-ever bill this week to review sanctions against Azerbaijan when they apply to specific officials. A “TURAN” correspondent in Washington was informed about this by congressional sources.
According to TURAN, the bill will lead to sanctions against more than 40 Azerbaijani officials who have played an active and leading role in violating the country’s rule of law and human rights. The bill would require the Biden administration to determine within 180 days of its passage whether the list of Azerbaijani officials included in the bill is subject to sanctions under existing U.S. law, including the Magnitsky Global Responsibility for Human Rights Act, as well as appropriations for state, foreign operations and related programs.
