Analyst Musa Miqayelyan wrote an article concerning Spitak earthquake and situation in Armenia overall.
“24 years ago a disastrous earthquake occurred in the northern region of Armenia, totally or partly were suffered second and the third cities of Armenia; Gyumri and Vanadzor, but the earthquake totally ruined Spitak city. Because of Soviet era, we couldn’t find out the exact reasons of earthquake and exact number of killed people.
More than 2 dozens of years passed but we still don’t have answers to many important questions. Armenian second president Robert Kocharyan, back in 2003 announced that Armenia is out of disaster zone, but he lied to us. Every one of us can now go to Spitak or Gyumri and see the truth. Not balanced and irregular development of Gyumri threatens to kill spiritual and cultural values of the city. Yes I do agree that the buildings will be rebuilt, the new ones are being constructed but you can’t bring the lives of the killed people and the laugh of their relatives, which they lost 24 years ago. There is also an idea which tortures me and people who think the way I do. When we say disaster zone we understand geographically the northern region of Armenia but that zone is in our souls when we see what is going on in our country. Our heroes were killed in NA, 10 not guilty people died in March 1 and all these make us think that Armenia is in a disaster zone.”
