The memorandum of understanding in the energy sector was signed between the governments of the U.S. and the Republic of Armenia. The document was signed by the RA Minister of Energy Armen Movsisyan and the U.S. Ambassador in Armenia John Heffern.
“One of the issues are safety issues of Metsamor nuclear power plant, and we are doing our best to cooperate with the RA government, so that this power is exploited by the most secure manner. This document does not reflect specific areas, but rather reflects the two countries’ willingness to cooperate in the energy sector, “said J. Heffern.
A. Movsisyan said that the decision had already been made, and all the calculations have shown that plant should exist for several years more.
According to J. Heffern, the U.S. position is consistent with the decision of the Armenian side. He noted that the operation of this plant must be stopped in 2016, but there is a decision to extend its existence for 10 years, and if the RA government goes to this, then they will support it.
