The reporter of Armenian news page 168.am covered Armenia’s independence day in connection with the presidential election of 2013. “Of course there is no direct connection between 21th anniversary of Independence and the presidential election in 2013.”, notes the article still bringing the symbolic connection between the two.
“Armenia’s domestic and foreign policy, events in the region and the world, Armenia’s future independence and sovereignty essentially depends on the next year’s presidential elections.”, notes the writer.
“Armenia’s internal political processes have never been so conditioned by external factors, as now. It is about Russia – West confrontation, which seems to come out of the “cold mode” and is displayed in a very specific form of political processes. Russia is doing everything to make Armenia a member of the Eurasian Union, and the West- Europe and the USA- is doing everything to prevent it. Presidential elections will be the focus of the intersection of these pressures and promises. The main problem of Serzh Sargsyan, however, is not so with the players, but with the outer poles.
S.Sargsyan should maximum convince the Russians that Armenia, however, will comprise the European Union, but that the decision will be made after the presidential election. The Russians, however, will not agree and, naturally, will insure them. If they try to ruin the elections S.Sargsyan will have reelections.
For international community S. Sarkisian will not have to seek protection from Russia, which in this case cannot be forced to join the European Union but to create a situation that S. Sargsyan to beg for it.
For the independence of Armenia there is no difference whether it will be Russia or the West. The forthcoming presidential election will have equal importance as a referendum on independence.”
