“Armenia has improved its border security system” read the 2011 Country Reports on Terrorism released by the US State Department yesterday as notes “Azatutyun” (Radio Liberty).
The report touched upon Armenia having closely cooperated with NATO and other partners while implementing the project of 24-hour emergency center together with the Ministry of Emergency to “organize the efficient cooperation among various departments in cases of different emergent situations, terrorism included.
“Authors of the report as well noted the improvement of Armenia-Georgia border crossing mechanisms; as of establishment new detecting tools on the border and other border checkpoints with Zvartnots airport included in the list. The report touched upon the issue of US assistance in the field of instituting new border towers and re-broadcasting stations on the border in line with the action plan of Armenia’s authorities to bring the border checkpoint mechanisms to European standards.
Another interesting aspect of the report was acknowledging Armenia as a country not financing terrorism , stating that terrorism risks were higher in Azerbaijan rather than in Armenia. Georgia, however, “attracted” most of the concern connected with those risks, noting that “Georgia managed to hinder bomb explosions for about four times during the year, as well arrest those involved in the explosions”.
