Several European Union countries are pushing for restrictive measures against Georgia, including suspending visa-free travel for its citizens in the EU, in response to the country’s parliament passing a “transparency of foreign influence” law. The “Financial Times” (FT) newspaper reported about it, citing officials familiar with the discussions.
“The Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Sweden, and Estonia are taking the initiative to discuss the possibility of imposing anti-Georgia sanctions at the meeting of EU foreign ministers next week.” Among the measures proposed for discussion are abolishing the visa-free regime for Georgian citizens in the EU, targeted sanctions, and freezing EU funds. “Various means of pressure on the Georgian government” are being considered in European capitals, the officials said.
