On March 21, RA Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, who was in Montevideo on an official visit, met with Graciela Bianchi Poli, the interim vice president of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, the acting president of the General Assembly, and the Chamber of Senators. Uruguay’s Deputy Minister of Health, Jose Luis Sanjyan, and Pedro Khisdonyan, a member of the Armenian-Uruguayan friendship group in the Uruguayan Parliament, were also present at the meeting.
At the meeting, both sides emphasized the high-level political dialogue between Armenia and Uruguay, one of the best manifestations of which is the recent high-level visits and the opening of resident diplomatic missions in the capitals of both countries. Minister Mirzoyan emphasized that the opening of the embassy in Montevideo is aimed at deepening friendly relations based on great sympathy and trust, which Uruguayan partners highly welcome.
The role of parliamentary diplomacy in continuously strengthening friendly relations between Armenia and Uruguay was also emphasized on both sides. Minister Mirzoyan thanked the Uruguayan parliament for taking a principled position on issues of priority for Armenia, including Azerbaijan’s attack on the people of Nagorno-Karabakh and the policy of ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Reference was made to the historical ties between the peoples of Armenia and Uruguay, which were established after Uruguay, being the first country to recognize the Armenian Genocide, gave shelter to a large number of Armenians.
At the meeting, the interlocutors also touched on issues related to security and stability in the South Caucasus. Minister Mirzoyan presented the latest developments in regulating relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the RA’s consistent approaches to key issues, stressing the importance of loyalty to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. Ararat Mirzoyan also referred to the discussions on the border delimitation process between Armenia and Azerbaijan, for which the Alma-Ata declaration of 1991 should be the legal basis.
