Bidzina Ivanishvilli, leader of the Georgian Dream coalition, doesn’t hide his intention of restoring ties with Russia. Even though different analysts think that it is too early to talk about the restoration of diplomatic ties between Georgia and Russia, if in the end it happens, it have an essential importance for Armenia, since due to it the railway connection between Armenia and Georgia may be restored.
In order to figure out how this issue will be solved our News Agency had an interview with political analyst Sergey Markedonov.
Markedonov also noted that it is still early to talk about the restoration of diplomatic ties between Russia and Georgia and even Georgia’s new authorities, because they still need to get authority. “I have heard those kind of announcements earlier too. Saakashvili himself coming to power announced that they will start a new phase. That’s how it started but we know how it ended”.
“May be there will be cooperation in trade market between Russia and Georgia but it is still early to talk about restoration of diplomatic ties. I don’t think that Russia and Georgia can come to an agreement concerning South Ossetia and Abkhazia conflict. Georgian government says that they are ready to talk with Abkhaz people, the other side is also ready for negotiations but they don’t want to be under Georgian power,” said Markedonov.
To the question whether it is possible to restore the railroad connection between Armenia and Russia, Markedonov responded:
“There is a very small chance concerning the issue. It is connected mainly how the Abkhazian issue will be solved. Moreover, we can’t say what the reaction of U.S, Azerbaijan, and Turkey will be concerning the restoration of the railroad connection.”
Georgian politician Soso Tsintsadze didn’t exclude the option that in near future the relations between Russia and Georgia will be examined, but , according to him, now the issue won’t be solved.
“What concerns the question how will Russia-Georgia cooperation affect to the region; I can say for sure that it will affect positively. I’m also convinced that Azerbaijan and Turkey will also be for the cooperation, since they also want to see development in the region, so they won’t be against it.”
