“When environmentalists alarm SOS Sevan, they should first of all address the protection of endangered species,” the head of RA National Institute of Zoology and Hydro Research Center Bardugh Gabrielyan said about it at the meeting with journalists.
He particularly noted that whitefish stocks are irreversibly lost at the Lake Sevan. For this purpose it is necessary to import whitefish roe from Russia in order to restore the lost. He said that he already made this proposal, but has not received a response.
As for trout, the speaker said that it was prohibited to hunt trout from seventies. “Trout is endemic species. Fortunately, every year the Ministry of Environment spreads petty fish in the lake, so now its quantity is somewhat recovered. ”
Mr. Gabrielyan said that the main reason for elimination of species is poaching. “Only when poaching disappears, it will be possible to restore the endangered species of Sevan.”
He also added that it is because of poaching that today we do not have industrial resources, and remnants of whitefish, which are still in water, are freely sold in markets.
