Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan mentioned four parties’ proposal to hold a referendum on Armenia’s membership in the EU.
He recalled the statement made by the PACE chair: RA is ready to be as close to the EU as the EU considers possible. He noted that if he thought that the people of Armenia did not support that idea, he would not have made such a statement. “What is the problem with holding a referendum to find out the opinion of the people?” I’m sorry, but I, as an official authorized to represent the people, know the people’s opinion.”
He spoke about the advisability of holding a referendum or not. According to the Prime Minister, the people will ask questions about the specific steps and dates of the campaign and whether the EU is ready for it. “How ready is the EU now?” Can I answer that question today? No, I can’t because processes are taking place in the EU today, which we have to evaluate. Elections are taking place in the EU, the results of which raise at least some questions. We have announced in the highest possible way about our political will to get closer to the EU,” he said.
