Right-wing extremist forces are on the way to power in France after the “National Union” won the first round of the parliamentary elections. The Left Alliance and the Macronists announced the withdrawal of their candidates, who were in unfavorable positions. A second round is expected in some constituencies. Supporters of the left forces took to the streets in Paris.
The French Ministry of Internal Affairs has published the final results of the first round of the parliamentary elections. The far-right “National Unity” alliance with leader Eric Ciotti received 33.1% of the votes. In second place is the left-wing coalition “New People’s Front” with 28%, while President Macron’s centrist alliance “Together for the Republic” collects only 20%. In the first round, 76 deputies were elected, including the head of the far-right faction, Marine Le Pen, and the first secretary of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure.
Sunday’s voting had a high turnout (66.7%) in several hundred regions. Three candidates each received the right to the second round, but this still does not ensure the final balance of power in the lower house of the new convocation.
