The EU civil observation mission in Armenia started its activities on February 20. Radar Armenia presents to its readers who is the head of the task in Armenia and what kind of work experience he has.
The head of the mission is Markus Ritter; born in 1962, he had a professional career in the German Federal Police for 27 years and held various leadership positions. From 1997-1998, he headed the police battalion against disobedience and violation of public order, Federal Border Guard Department, and was the deputy director of the Border Guard Department at Frankfurt Airport from 2002-2004. He held various positions in the Border Police Department and the Central Office of the Federal Police. In 2014, he was appointed Vice President of the Regional Federal Police of Frankfurt International Airport, and from 2020 to 2023, he was the President of the same Police in Stuttgart.
He also has rich work experience at the international level. In 2004-2005 he was the chief of staff of the UN mission in Kosovo; in 2007-2008, he was the chief of staff of the UN observer mission in Georgia; in 2012-2013, he was the head of planning and operations of the EU aviation security mission in South Sudan, in 2017-2019 he was the head of the EU advisory mission in Baghdad.
In 1989-1994, he received a law degree at Heidelberg University in Germany. Along with their master’s degree in law, he also has a master’s degree in administrative sciences. In 1999 he received a doctorate from the German University of Administrative Sciences in Speyer.
Markus Ritter is married and has two children.
