Georgian media, citing the announcement made by Elena Tevdoradze, reports that the Pardon Commission under the President of Georgia has recommended the release of over 700 prisoners, about half those on the relevant list.
Tevdoradze, chairperson of the Commission, did not disclose the exact number of prisoners recommended for a pardon saying that it is the president’s prerogative.
She said the commission gave recommendations to pardon prisoners who do not pose a danger to society, that is those who did not commit murder, were not involved in the sale of drugs and do not serve a sentence for rape, trafficking and those who are not repeat offenders.
The pardon is expected by St. George’s Day, November 23.
