In the interview with 168.am the head of EU delegation to Armenia Onno Simons referring to recent developments on Safarov’s affair, said: “I think that European Parliament was quite strict in condemning the step of Azerbaijani government and clearly stated that it wasn’t what was expected from them.”
Earlier in the resolution of European Parliament it was written that EP deplores, not condemns, the extradition by Hungary and pardon by Azerbaijan.
Simons was asked to comment on the statement from the resolution noting that “EU must have greater role in the regulation of Nagorno Karabakh conflict.”
“Recenly special EU representative Ms. Lefor visited the region. He acts as a mediator between the two countries and he clearly made everybody understand that such behavior was not expected from Azerbaijan. When the relations are frozen completely, we can help both side, I mean help, not solve.”- said the European diplomat.
Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe (PACE) is to discuss Safarov’s affair next month. Simons noted that the outcome of the discussion should be similar to that of the European Parliament.
