David Arutyunov, an Armenian expert on regional problems, today had an interview with Armenian media and touched upon the issue of Islamist terrorists, especially Taliban group.
One of the journalists recalled that earlier there was information that Islamist terrorists are in Armenia and asked Arutyunov to comment on it.
“The information about possible actions of “Taliban” armed group in Armenia and in general, their appearance in Armenia seems rather strange for a number of reasons.
First of all I should stress that this movement, in contrast to, for example, “Al-Qaeda” in general has rarely been seen in activities outside of Afghanistan.
Secondly it is very dangerous for any Islamist terrorists group to enter a country like Armenia where there are not many Muslim communities, and they will very soon be recognized, so I think the information is just baseless. They can freely enter countries of Europe and U.S. since there are a lot of Muslim communities.
Finally the information about the appearance of the Taliban groups in Armenia raises the main question, why should they come to Armenia, what can be their aim? Obviously the target of Taliban’s is the U.S and everything that is connected with it. As we see there is not any aim for Taliban’s to come to Armenia, since in Afghanistan there are thousands of U.S troops, with whom they actually fight” said Arutyunov.
