Hungarian media reports that Hungary’s government has condemned Azerbaijan over the release of Ramil Safarov, who convicted murder of an Armenian officer, Gurgen Margaryan, in Budapest ,2004.
Note, Ramil Safarov participated in a NATO program in Budapest and used an ax to murder Armenian officer Gurgen Margarjan and as a result, received a life sentence in prison.
On Friday, August 31, Hungary extradited Safarov. The latter received a pardon upon his arrival. To the response, the Armenian government was outraged and announced severing diplomatic ties with Hungary.
Late on Sunday, September 2, the Hungarian government issued a statement condemning Azerbaijan’s actions, stressing that Hungary acted in harmony with international law in the case but Baku provided misleading information about how Safarov would be treated upon his arrival to homeland.
