The Arpa International Film Festival, dedicated to independent cinema, has concluded in Los Angeles. Established in 1997, the festival is considered an important platform for independent films with cultural and diverse themes, recognized by international film commissions. This year’s three-day festival included 49 selected films from 18 countries.
One of the festival’s main screenings was the film Shakkar, in which U.S.-based actress from Gyumri, Mariam Vardanyan, plays a key role in the creative team.
Vardanyan is not only one of the film’s lead actors but also the co-writer and co-producer of the screenplay. The director is Nasim Kiani. The film was shot in Armenia, in Vardanyan’s hometown of Gyumri.
The story focuses on a woman who tries to protect a young boy named Ara after learning that his uncle, Oswald, poses a danger to the child. The dramatic narrative explores themes of self-sacrifice, family bonds, personal risk, and responsibility, revealing complex and profound layers of human relationships. The film runs 1 hour and 37 minutes.
Shakkar was included in the official program of the Arpa International Film Festival with a preliminary award nomination. Its international premiere took place at the TCL Chinese Theatre within the framework of the festival.
