The Georgian government is deceiving its own people; they say they are bringing Georgia closer to the EU, but in reality, they are pushing Georgia away from the EU. This was stated by the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos.
According to her, in the case of Georgia, today’s report is the worst ever prepared for any candidate country.

There is a clear retreat in many areas, particularly in fundamental issues such as the rule of law, the fight against corruption, and media freedom. The Georgian government is not pursuing the interests of its own people. The only option is for the Georgian government to review numerous laws that are clearly anti-European. The government should stop arresting its opponents and journalists; it should not continue to persecute civil society organizations. We have difficulties in supporting them, because they are threatened with imprisonment.”It is clear that Georgia is still a candidate country for EU membership, but for the European Commission, it is only on paper. We will do everything to support the media and civil society organizations,” Kos said.
