“China does not fit the role of an ‘impartial mediator’ to resolve the military conflict between Moscow and Kyiv,” said John Kirby, the White House’s National Security Council (NSC) strategic communications coordinator.
He noted that China has not yet condemned Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine and continues to buy Russian oil. Commenting on Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Moscow, during which he and Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a “new era” of their “special” relationship, Kirby noted that Russia and China are not true allies but have a “marriage of convenience” relationship.
