US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said China was providing Russia with “diplomatic cover” so that it could continue to commit war crimes. As The New York Times writes, Blinken commented on Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Moscow a few days after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin.
According to the Secretary of State, this visit shows that “China does not consider itself obliged to hold Putin accountable for the atrocities committed in Ukraine.”
Blinken, who made these statements on March 20 during a briefing in Washington, also criticized Beijing’s peace proposals. According to him, the ceasefire calls, which do not include a demand for the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from the Ukrainian territory, “actually mean the validation of Russian actions.”
