Dutch parliament adopts resolution requesting government to increase pressure on Azerbaijan to open Lachin Corridor

The Dutch parliament adopted a resolution asking the government together with other EU member states to increase pressure on Azerbaijan to open the Lachin corridor.

The Federation of Armenian Organisations in the Netherlands (FAON) welcomed the adoption with large majority by the Dutch parliament of the motion submitted by Mr. Don Ceder (Christian Union faction), cosigned by Mrs. Agnes Mulder (CDA faction).

“The motion states that the blockade of the only access road to Nagorno Karabakh continues and that the humanitarian situation for the population of Nagorno Karabach is deteriorating as a result thereof, that Azerbaijan has ignored calls to reopen the Lachin Corridor and that Russian peacekeepers do not fulfill the conditions of agreement between Armenia, Azerbaijan and the Russian Federation.

The motion asks the government to investigate, at a European level, how to increase the pressure on Azerbaijan to end the blockade and to involve like-minded EU member states in this process.

The FAON, that submitted a petition to the Dutch Parliament on January 17th and held a 3 day Silent Protest in front of the parliament for the unblocking of Lachin-corridor, looks forward to swift actions of the Dutch Government and the EU in particular to unblock the road, and to end the humanitarian catastrophe, with 120.000 people without gas in the ice-cold mountainous region, without supply of food and medication, and with electricity just for limited hours a day. Also creation of international guarantees is necessary to avoid repetition of the blockade.

The situation between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the chances for peace have been deteriorated by this way of acting of Azerbaijan. The EU, also with its own efforts, was hoping for a peace agreement. The FAON is keeping its hopes up for the succeeding of the peace negotiations,” FAON said in a press release.
